Coordination of Humanitarian Activities in West Africa

When developing the Common Humanitarian Action Plan for 2005, humanitarian partners in the West Africa sub-region decided to focus coordination efforts on the following challenges:

1. Enhance emergency preparedness and early warning;
2. Facilitate response and post conflict transition
3. Strengthen information management
4. Strengthen partnerships between the donor community and humanitarian actors.

Focus is also placed on combating sub regional and cross border problems, stressing the need to develop an integrated response towards the prevention of conflicts in West Africa incorporating political, humanitarian and military aspects.

The Joint Humanitarian Review Mission undertaken by a group of donors, NGOs and the United Nations in June/July 2003 concluded that an overall subregional strategy was needed in order to address critical issues within the protection, coordination and peacebuilding sectors.
