Download the file on displacement in the North of Sri Lanka since October 2008

Using Google Earth, or another suitable application, (e.g. - Map view, KML Viewer) you can view updated information on displacement in the North of Sri Lanka since October 2008.

It's easy to get started, just follow the steps below.
The examples will use Google Earth, but other similar applications are available.

STEP I : Download Google Earth

Google Earth is free to download, and is available from Google for PC and Mac or Linux. Just visit http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html and click on the "Agree and Download" button once you have reviewed and accepted the terms and conditions.

Once downloaded, open the installer file and let Google Earth install on your computer.

STEP II : Download the KMZ file

A KMZ file is a special file type that encodes geographical data for displaying in a range of applications, including Google Earth.

STEP III : Open the KMZ file using Google Earth

Overview
When you open the KMZ file, the earth will appear and you will automatically zoom in to the Northern part of Sri Lanka. After a few seconds, the map will show icons of IDP camp locations with updated IDP figures.
It also contains the following information;
- An overview of the displacement since Oct 2008
- Hospital locations & IDPs in hospitals
- IDP locations with no of IDP's
- IDP locations with no of IDP's (in 3D bars)
- Proposed camp locations
- Camp & road structure for Menik Farm
- District boundaries of Sri Lanka
- Cluster Updates for the North of Sri Lanka

   
Working with data layers
We have arranged data into layers to provide easy access and navigation. You will be able to switch any of the following layers on & off
Legend layer - This holds the list of icons in the legend, that is visible on placed in the left side of the Google Earth window.
Trend Charts layer – This holds all district summaries and cluster updates, show in large icons in the Google Earth window.
Hospitals layer – This shows hospital locations, where IDPs are being treated.
IDP Locations layer consists of the following;
- Menik Farm area with road structure, camp area and health facilities.
- All IDP camp locations & proposed camp sites.
- Camp population in 3D bars – Select “3D Columns” in “Displaced Persons” layer to view 3D Bars.
District Boundaries Layer – This shows district boundaries of Sri Lanka

To view any of the above layers, simply tick the required layer in the Google Earth navigation panel on the left of the screen.
   

To view 3D columns on the camp populations, select “3D Columns” in the “Displaced Persons” layer and tilt the map vertically.

   
View Site Data
Click on any of the icons shown and more information will appear in a pop-up window/box
