FAO and Coordination
FAO is working hand in hand with the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) to provide effective coordination of the various activities carried out by different organizations (UN Agencies and NGOs) in the agricultural sector. Coordination is carried out through Agriculture Coordination Committee (ACC) meetings which are held on a bi-weekly basis. Meetings are held in the FAO Conference Room and co-chaired with the MoA for tracking of agricultural activities and to avoid duplication/overlap of activities by the various organizations and to provide technical guidance and standardized procedures on agricultural activities. This forum is well attended by national and international NGOs as well as representatives from the donor community.

As lead UN agency for the agriculture and food security sector, FAO has established a database in tabular format to track NGO activities, including areas of implementation and number of beneficiary farm families served by the respective NGOs. This information is shared with sister UN agencies and among NGOs in the sector. The Humanitarian Information Centre (HIC) has converted this tabular data (using geo-code listings) into a graphic format in order to easily identify areas of duplication and overlap of activities. This information is compiled and maintained in collaboration with WFP's Food for Work Committee, for the same reason.

Under the ACC and in conjunction with FAO, the MoA, donor community and selected NGO representatives, a Technical Working Group (TWG) was formed initially to look into the various aspects of seeds and tools. The Group was requested to standardize the "input package" (vegetable seeds and tools mainly for the dry season as well as rice seed, roots and tubers and tools for the main planting season), to be adopted in the future by all agencies working in the agriculture sector. The TWG completed its initial task and presented this to the ACC for adoption. ACC members adopted the recommendations after deliberation and making minor modifications. The ACC has requested all of its members to adhere to these recommendations in all future proposals and projects. The next task of the TWG is to undertake post-distribution monitoring and evaluation responsibilities.
