| | “Buying from Africa for Africa” is an initiative of the International Trade Centre (ITC) to increase developing countries' access to aid procurement. The ITC "Buying from Africa for Africa" meeting on Emergency Items and Transport Services held in Nairobi (22-24 November
2006) gathered 180 participants representing 75 pre-selected enterprises from Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda and 50 procurement professionals from 39 international aid agencies. The Inter-Agency Working Group (IAWG) on Emergency Preparedness for Central and East Africa was one of the partners of the International Trade Centre (ITC). | | Summary report from the EPN conference, Spotlight on Cultural Diversity: Using difference as a positive force for HR management, May 2008. The report highlights some of the key learning points from the conference:
- Cultural sensitivity and awareness starts with ourselves: only once we realise how our own perceptions are shaped can we begin to understand others
- If recognised and managed, cultural diversity can enhance team performance.
- Diversity is not a choice, but an obligation for humanitarian organisations as we are diverse as individuals, as organisations, our beneficiaries are diverse and so too are the institutions we deal with
- High levels of trust lead to high performance in teams. Different people look for and place emphasis on different behaviours in others before they will trust them
- The terms leadership and management are often used interchangeably but they are significantly different
