Since December 2006, the IASC Sub-Working Group on Gender in Humanitarian Action (Gender SWG) has supported the integration of gender as a crosscutting issue into the clusters and other elements of the humanitarian system.
The Gender SWG, which brings together representatives from UN Agencies, NGOs, Donors, Member States and NGO consortia, meets on a monthly basis and its work is structured around an annual work plan.
» The Gender SWG has the following main objectives for its work in 2013:
- LEADERSHIP: Ensure that humanitarian leadership has a greater understanding of gender gaps in humanitarian response and how to fulfill their commitments and responsibilities for gender equality programming.
- COORDINATION: Support the coordinated response to humanitarian action by ensuring that the distinct needs and capacities of women, girls, boys and men are addressed.
- ACCOUNTABILITY: Ensure that gender dimensions are mainstreamed into the emerging IASC accountability frameworks for performance and affected populations.
In 2013, the Gender SWG is co-chaired by UN Women and Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) in New York and UNHCR and the International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA) in Geneva. In order to optimize its work and impact, the SWG have face-to-face meetings with members in Geneva, New York and Washington DC.
