Improving Coordination in the Health Sector

WHO, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), UNICEF and IFRC, is endeavoring to improve coordination in the health sector through the standardization of donated medical supplies.  Organisations donating medical supplies to the DPRK are requested to adhere to the following lists where possible.

# WHO Recommended Medical Kits for County Hospitals

# WHO Recommended Medical Kits for Ri Clinics

# WHO, UNICEF, IFRC, UNFPA  Essential Drugs List

Distribution of the Essential Medicine Manual

Last year, the WHO, IFRC and UNICEF reviewed and updated the Essential Medicine Manual based on the most recent WHO Formulary. The translation was administered by the WHO. The three agencies greed to print 30,000 copies, with each agency paying for 10,000 copies. The printing was accomplished by January 2004. IFRC and UNICEF will distribute the manuals in their usual "designated" areas.

New!  Please click here to view the MoPH/UNICEF distribution plan.  Distribution of the manuals started with the regular distribution of medicine kits and is expected to be completed by April 2004.

Distribution of Medicines in the DPRK in 2003

The Central Medical Warehouse (MoPH) succeeded in delivering all UNICEF medicines as planned in 2003: 100 per cent of deliveries were administered as planned, 62.5 per cent were delivered within the planned month, with the remaining 37.% per cent being delivered late.  This is a good job considering the logistical difficulties confronting MoPH in distributing medicines to more than 2500 Ri clinics/hospitals and 141 county/provincial hospitals.
