Message
to Members of the Agriculture Sector Group:
December 2003
Following
a lengthy period of relative inactivity during 2002-03, some
“residential members” - Pyongyang-based
agencies- of the Agriculture Sector Group met in October 2003, to
discuss the revival of this hitherto active group, whose origins date
back to 1998
.
Membership
of the Group has always been informal. Participation is open to
agencies and organisations implementing emergency, rehabilitation and
development programmes in DPR Korea, in agriculture (crops,
horticulture, livestock, research) environment, forestry, fisheries
and rural development as relates to agriculture.
Participants
at the October meeting were in general agreement that this Sector
Group resumes it’s role, with FAO
as Focal Point, in order to facilitate
exchange of information within it’s membership of resident and
non-resident agencies. An updated membership list
of participating agencies has subsequently been compiled and is
being circulated. The Sector Group welcomes other ongoing initiatives
and groupings, e.g., the Green Table, whose participants meet several times each year when
single topics are being presented. Also individual
Agencies making presentations
at the end of respective Consultant’s assignments. Likewise the
participation of members of other Sector Groups, viz.,
Water-Sanitation (Focal Point: UNICEF), Health-Nutrition (Focal Point:
WHO) and Food Aid (Focal Point: WFP).
The
recording and circulation of formal Minutes had not been a practice of
the previous Agriculture Group. However it was generally agreed that
some form of Summary be produced and circulated, for the benefit of
those unable to attend meetings, more especially for several
interested non-residents implementing projects in DPR Korea wanting to
stay in touch.
